Singapore The Republic of Singapore (Malay. Republik Singapura; Chin. Simp. 新加坡 共和国; Tam. சிங்கப்பூர் குடியரசு)

The city-state located on islands in Southeast Asia, separated from the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula narrow Johor Strait. It shares borders with the Sultanate of Johor, which is part of Malaysia, and Riau islands part of Indonesia. The name Singapore comes from the Malay Singh (lion), borrowed from the Sanskrit सिंह siMha (lion), and the Sanskrit पुर pura (city).

The city-state of Singapore is located on the same island and the adjacent small islands. In total there are more than 50 islands, the largest of wgich are the island of Sentosa. Singapore that is separated from Malaysia by Johor Strait, through which the dam is built, from Indonesia - by Malacca and Singapore Straits.

The country's territory is 715,8 km². 

The area of Singapore is 581 square km. Its length from east to west - 42 km, and from north to south - 23 km. About 40% of the territory are occupied by park areas, nature reserves, plantations and forests. Almost half of the land has the status of a residential, commercial and industrial importance. The terrain of the island is flat, there is not a place above the height of 180 m. The coastal areas are mainly lowland, often very swampy. In the south-western shores there are coral reefs.

Biggest islands: Singapore (main island), Ubin, Tekong Besar, Brani, Sentosa, Semakau and Sudong.

Languages: official are Malay, Chinese, Indian (Tamil) and English. Malay allotted state status, English is the language of international communication and office management. Most of the population of Singapore - bilingual and speaks, besides their mother tongue, English.

Religion: among religions dominate Confucianism, Buddhism and Islam. Also Christianity is very spread.
