A country situated mainly in the south-western part of Asia, the Middle East, and in part (about 3% of the territory, 20% of the population) - in South-Eastern Europe (Eastern Thrace). Turkeu was formed in 1923 as a result of partition of the Ottoman Empire. In 2000, Turkish Republic has acquired the official status of the country - a candidate for membership of the European Union. A member of NATO since 1952.

The main part of the country lies in the Anatolian peninsula and the Armenian Highland, lower - the Balkan peninsula between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. In the east Turkey borders with Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Iran; in the south - with Iraq and Syria; in the west - with Greece and Bulgaria. Country is washed by four seas: the Black Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, Aegean Sea and Sea of Marmara.

The European part is a hilly plateau, towering at 1,000 meters above sea level. Asian side is bounded by mountain systems from the north (the Pontic Mountains) and south (the Taurus Mountains), located between the Anatolian Plateau. The highest point in Turkey is Mount Ararat (5165 m), which is located in Eastern Anatolia. Almost all rivers in Turkey are rapid and unnavigable, some even dry up in summer. The longest river in the country is the Kizilirmak river (1,150 kilometers). Black Sea and Mediterranean coasts have a smooth coastline and almost devoid of all sorts of coves and bays. But the coast of the Aegean Sea, on the contrary, strongly indented.
