Cyprus (греч. Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία, тур. Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti)

Island nation in the eastern Mediterranean. Member of the European Union since 1 of May 2004. The island is divided into three parts: 60% of the island is controlled by the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus (mostly populated by Greeks), 38% - of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (mostly populated by Turks), 2% - the British armed forces.

A small island in the Mediterranean Sea is an one of the best places to stay in the world thanks to the mild climate, clean sandy beaches and excellent service in hotels. The location, grounds and landscape

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean. Length of the island from north to south is about 100 km, from west to east - about 225 km. We can say that on this island west and east meet each other - eastern part belongs to Turkey, while the rest is a kind of continuation of Greece. Through proximity to the countries of Asia Minor Cyprus also applies to Southwest Asia.

The country's territory is 9250 km².

The Northern coast of the island is mostly rocky, but south is rich on beaches with sandy coves. Mountains occupy almost half of the territory of the island. The main mountain system of Cyprus is Kyrenia in the north and the Troodos in the southwest. The highest point of the Troodos Mountains is Mount Olympus (1953 m), which is also the highest point of the island.

Population: more than 1 million 140 thousand people.

Capital: Nicosia (Greek: Λευκωσία - Lefkosia; tour. Lefkoşa - Lefkosha). Population - 276 thousand inhabitants.

The largest resorts are Larnaca, Paphos, Limassol, Ayia Napa, Protaras, Famagusta (under the control of the TRNC), Kyrenia (under the control of the TRNC).

The climate and the average temperature

Cyprus belongs to subtropical climatic zones, the Mediterranean region. Winter on the island is soft and warm. The average temperature in the coldest month – January -12  degrees on the coast and 4 degrees in the mountains. During the winter months falls most of the precipitation (70-80 mm). Spring and autumn are very short. The average summer temperature is 28 - 30 degrees in the plains and about 28 degrees in the Troodos Mountains. The heat can reach 35 degrees, but it is carried by the sea quite easily. Precipitation at this time is very little. At sea you can swim in April, when the water temperature reaches 20 degrees. In August it warms up to 28 degrees.

Flora and fauna

Flora and fauna of the island is incredibly interesting and quite unique. In ancient times Cyprus was famous for its forests. In our time it is preserved the narrow strip along the slopes of the mountains and along the coastline. In the forests grow oaks, pine trees, strawberry trees, giant cacti, endemic species of cypress, juniper, cedar and alder. Nature of Cyprus can’t boast with especially picturesque plain. Most of the year it looks like a scorched steppe. The most colorful Cyprus in February - May. In the meadows can be found tulips, gladioli, irises, orchids, lilies. In the mountains flowers grow on rocks. Among the flowers and shrubs there are many endemics.

Cyprus passes through seasonal migration routes of birds, so it is a paradise for bird watchers. There are such rare species as "Eleonora's falcon", imperial eagle, vulture and predatory vulture-griffin. At Salt Lake near Larnaca you can admire the pink flamingos that come here every year from the Caspian Sea.

Among the animals of Cyprus you can find lizards, chameleons, turtles, squirrels, weasels, wild rabbits snakes and seals. But the island's main asset is the mouflon. This wild mammal, a close relative of the ram, was almost destroyed because of their meat. Mouflon now listed as endangered and protected in the reserve in the west of the island.

How best to get

In the summer season tourists from Moscow to Larnaca are delivered by the charter flights. They fly usually on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays (less often). Regular flights Moscow - Larnaca plies "Aeroflot" and "Cyprus Airways" and regular flight Moscow - Paphos plies "Transaero". Duration of the flight "Cyprus Airways" is about 4.5 hours, other airlines have the right to fly over Turkish airspace, the flight spends approximately 3 hours 15 minutes.

You can also get to Cyprus by sea through numerous scheduled flights, as well as on private vessels from the ports of Greece, Rhodes, Egypt and Israel. From the Greek port of Piraeus several transport companies carry out regular ferry trafic to Limassol and back.

Best time to visit

For a beach holiday the best time to visit is between April and May and September – October. At this time it is not too hot and you can already swim. If the purpose of the trip is skiing, you’d better go, of course, in the winter months.

Popular tourist sites

Nicosia (Lefkosia) – is the capital and largest city of Cyprus. It is located in the center of the island and divided by the "green line" - a buffer zone between the southern and northern Cyprus. The northern part of the city is also the capital of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

All major attractions of the city gathered in the old quarter of the capital. These are the Byzantine church and the church of Hrisalinotissa and Tripiotis with the famous iconostasis, St. John's Cathedral, Archbishop's Palace, Famagusta Gate and Venetian Walls. Among the museums you will be interested to see Leventis, Byzantine Museum, jewelry, Museum of National Resistance, the Folk Art Museum and Art Gallery.

Major resorts are Limassol, Larnaka, Paphos, Ayia Napa, Protaras, Polis.

Ski Resort (aka Nature Reserve) is Troodos Mountains.
