Portugal (República Portuguesa)
The westernmost country in continental Europe. Portugal is located in the south-western part of the Iberian Peninsula. In the north and east borders with Spain, to the south and west it is washed by the Atlantic Ocean. The country's name comes from the city of Oporto (lat. Portus Cale). Republic from 1910 Member of the NATO (1949), the United Nations (since 1955), the EU (1 January 1986), part of the Schengen area and the euro area. This is one of the oldest countries in Europe with an incredibly rich history. The westernmost state in the continental Eurasia. Located in the south-western part of the Iberian Peninsula. On land borders only with Spain (1214 km). Portugal is also controlls islands of Azores and Madeira.

Relief of Minho province in the west and Alto-Traz-os-Montes and Alto Douro in the east, located to the north of the Douro river is rugged and mountainous. Beira province, stretching from Douro River to the upper portion of the Tagus river, with the exception of the coastal plain, also is occupied by mountains. In its central part is situated the highest point in Portugal - Estrela mountain (1993 m). Fertile plains in the lower reaches Tagus river (Ribatejo province) and in the coastal area to the north and south of the capital Lisbon belong to the province of Estremadura. To the east and south of it extends the Alentejo province, with the gently rolling terrain and entire southern part of Portugal, the Algarve is occupied by plains, natural conditions similar to those of the Mediterranean area of North Africa.

Religion: about 94% of the population professes Catholicism. Protestants make up about 1% of the population. In Lisbon and Porto there are Jewish communities, also according to surveys, about 4.5% identify themselves as atheists.
