Dominican Republic, República Dominicana
A country in Eastern part of the island of Haiti (Caribbean Sea) and on offshore islands. The western half of the island occupies the state the Republic of Haiti. The island is part of the Greater Antilles archipelago. For most of its history (up to independence) the colony was known as the "Santo Domingo", in honor of its patron saint, Saint Dominic. Residents called «Dominicanos» (Dominicans).

Dominican Republic is located on the island of Haiti. To the west it borders with the state of Haiti, on the north is washed by the Atlantic Ocean. Along the eastern shores located the Mona Strait, which separates it from the island of Puerto Rico, on the south is washed by the Caribbean Sea.
The country's territory is 48 730 km².
The relief is mainly mountainous, the highest point - Mount Duarte (3175 m). Off the coast extend lowlands, in the north is located the Cibao Valley, where most of the population lives. The lowest point within the country - Lake Enrikiio (42 m below sea level), this lake is also the largest one, longest river - Jake Affairs Norte (296 km).

Languages: Spanish is the official language. On the border with Haiti many speak French, and in tourist areas very common are English, German and Italian.
